Abstract:
The article considers the world historical experience of the emergence and the main development stages of such an important financial instrument as mutual insurance. We give the information which most interests a wide range of readers, about the history and modern practice of implementing a non-commercial approach to insurance, which has been used long before the emerge of commercial insurers. The study is based on the data analysis of domestic and foreign sources, some of which are little known in Russia. We systematize scientific knowledge for building a single picture of the development of mutual insurance. The main objective of the paper and its scientific and educational value are to increase knowledge and inform a wide range of readers about the history and important modern types of mutual insurance as an actual tool for risks protection. As a result of the study, we draw a number of key conclusions: historical and modern data confirm the prevalence and efficiency of various types of mutual insurance; it is through a mutual insurance that many modern systems of compulsory insurance of property and liability risks and pensions have emerged; in Russia there is a significant potential for the development of the financial sector on the basis of mutual insurance, especially with regard to insurance of property risks of citizens and legal persons, and in the form of "confessional insurance", primarily - takaful insurance.
